Chain Gang

D.I.Y.-ish. I took some chain and safety-pinned it to the sides of an 2-year old AA dress. I got the safety-pin chain idea from an editorial in a magazine I'm blanking on. The stylist stuck chains all over Alexander Wang tees and Balmain shoulder pads. I figured American Apparel could use the same treatment.
I topped it all off with a men's chambray shirt and thrifted white booties. Rather fulfilling fashion-wise and most importantly cheap, cheap, cheap!

Challenge to readers: how else to use safety pins on clothes you already have in your closet. Discuss.

  1. I use safety pins on the inside of garments to hold them together in a way that gives it a different and new silhouette.

Goth-people use safety pins just as they are for decoration...

    I loved you DIY-ish dress!:D

  5. I am so jealous of that chambray shirt! Love the diy :) I'm tempted to buy a ton of safety pins, and make a pattern on a t-shirt.

  7. Who knew a little bit of chain could step that dress up about ten notches? I love it with the awesome shirt and boots! Hmm how else to use safety pins... Cut a garment into strips then safety pin it all back together for a shredded rockstar look!

  8. So that chambray shirt is awesome! And congrats on making chains and safety-pins look really cool rather than really angsty-teenagery.

I used to rock one of those huge safety pins as a button on a cardigan with no buttons...

  10. Ooh love this DIY! Hmm I'm not much of a girl for safety pin experimentation...if it were up to me I might buy the biggest ones I can get my hands on and embellish them with ribbons and charms and pendants and use them as blazer lapel pins.

  11. In my current blog post, the dress I am wearing is actually safety pinned in the back - discreetly though - to shorten it. But hot damn, i love your ingenuity! That dress is HOT x100000!

  14. Yay DIY! I think I may use them to pin together a t-shirt with rips, so it looks like it was pinned on purpose ;)

  15. Ooh I like this, especially because you can change the position of the chains whenever you want!

I've never done anything interesting with safety pins other than using them to make skirts a little shorter etc!

  19. your boots are very vintage rocker glam. I like the way you took the safety pin- chain past the goth look. I have a big safety pin that i stuck fake pearls on and used as a pendant.
