Summer Attire

Bag from Mingei World Arts in Decatur.

Hotlanta is living up to its name. We had a respite of cooler weather this spring, but the humidity has finally sprung its murky head, and our days won't dip bellow the 85 degree mark until late September. But that's okay, really. I love hot, hot heat and the slothful way we have to move around here in the south.

What I don't like? The damn summer outfits. Heat makes you a bit listless, so pulling out whatever old dress you have in the closet closest to your limp finger tips (other hand waving a large paper fan) seems the only option. So the downside to the fanning, and the sipping of mint juleps and the rocking on the front porch/balcony, it doesn't make for great outfit posts.

We promise we'll work on it, but for now we want to keep it simple. At least my Guatemalan bag keeps me from looking too much like I just stepped of an AA store and Cath's Cassius sunnies from Moxsie add a little bit of dreaminess to her simple, chic attire.

What do you guys and girls do when the best option seems to sweat it out in a boring old tank and shorts? Do you give in or fight the summer attire malaise?

That bag is so, so, so fantastic!! And love both dresses :) Once the weather gets really hot, I break out the linens and light cottons. I try to stay smart but laid back.

My dad did a mission trip a while back to Guatemala and brought back so many bags/trinkets. They definitely have a cool look. I'm also glad it's getting hot!

Well, you're both doing a fabulous job of disguising your humidity-induced laziness here!

I've started making a list of outfits I want to wear, or pieces I want to use as focal points. Keeps me engaged.

Oh I want a mint julep, and a porch. OK, I'm going to yelp to search for good mint juleps in nyc.

Jean shorts and a light breezy top really seems to be the only way here...and then, when you step into a building, you have to scramble for cover, it's so cold. Maybe a metallic accessories that you can just stick in your freezer and then wear just before going outside???

i always where summer dresses during the summer humid heat. and i also LOVE the heat! i dont mind living in this hot humid weather either. go dirty south!

Awwww. Yes I think you're forced to be a lot lot more creative in winter than in summer. All the layering means you wear so many clothes in different ways. That being said, summer fashion is supposed to be free! You both look gorgeous and happy. Must be all the Vitamin D from the sunshine.

I love hot weather!! And it's a good excuse to wear cute dresses!

Style Pill just had a post about statement necklaces looking best on extremely simple outfits.

http://www.mystylepill.com/2009/06/currently-coveting-jewelry-wish-list/

It was such a great point. I'm with you, I love the heat, LOVE IT, but it definitely makes me want to wear tank tops every day. Thank the lord that MObama is liberating sleeveless looks for the workplace. A gorgeous statement necklace is the perfect antidote to a too-simple summer outfit, methinks.

i just wear loose summer dresses and when it gets real hot, apparently, i run around walmart flashing people. southern heat is madness!

You two look great! Hmm to fight the malaise I opt for skirts and dresses instead of T-shirts and shorts and cute sandals instead of flip flops. Costume jewelry tends to give me a rash when I'm sweating a lot, so I wear a lot of dangly earrings for bling instead of necklaces, bracelets, and rings.

Love your AA color block dress! You both look fab! Oh that's the one thing I actually DO miss that LA doesn't have.. the humidity! I'll opt for loose fitting dresses... nothing too tight or else it will stick to me and that's never pleasant. :)

If you can't tell by my non-work outfit posts lately, I've been using fedoras to keept it snappy. And I use my bikini tops instead of bras, I feel they're more sweatproof. And who enjoys underwire + sweat? And who likes the idea of sweating profusely in their cute VS bra?

I really want to invest in a sharp, smart, Cuban cigar smoking, mojito drinking panama hat :)

it's been unusually roasty up here (it hit 90, in early june! ridiculous) Summer is a time for simple and sweet outfits, like both of yours. I live in men's shirts, fluffy skirts, thin shorts and loose tanks, then attempt to accesorize to liven it up.

I love that two-tone blue dress. I am a minimalist at heart, so summer attire makes me happy. :)

being "uncomfortably" hot is the best feeling for me in the world, i don't mind sitting in still heat, as long as all i'm doing is just sitting ;-)
usually a cute pair of sandals, some nifty dresses, and slinky jewelry are awesome alternatives to the ever so monotonous shorts and tank

That's why I live up here in the frozen north. It was 60 here on the lake...

by the by, you are way too much of an enabler. That site is great. I'll take a briefcase in tobacco brown, please.

Honestly, with a bag like that, who cares about the outfit? ;-) I do prefer more casual outfits though, so I think you girls look fantastic. I actually find it worse when someone overdoes it in hot weather... it just looks so forced. My laziness in dressing up rises proportionally to the heat, so I just grab anything that's comfortable and airy. I can totally relate. The only exception is if I go out at night, but most people tend to be dressed for comfort during the day! Dresses are the easiest, just because they are an outfit already.

both of these outfits are picture perfect for summer! :) i wish we were getting some of your heat up north...it's in the 60s here today :(

i get sooooo irked when it's too hot to dress up.. it makes me sad actually to wear the same uniform of shorts and a tank top or some random dress.. no creativity at all but it does feel nice to let go and wear whatever works for the weather sometimes!!! u look great with the simple AA dress :)

and i posted an elizabeth & james giveaway on my blog, please enter!

blech. i remember the texas summers, i bet they're similar. for me it was about pieces with flow (sweat is so sticky!) and sandals.

Summer (especially summers in Atlanta) brings out the creativity. It's really a testament as to one's personal style. This summer I'm thinking baby shorts with men's long sleeved tops with rolled sleeves. Lots of loose fitting tanks with bralettes and lots and lots of jewelry. I'm part of the KISS sect when it comes to clothes - Keep It Simple, Stupid. haha

Eek, I don't think I could survive having that sort of weather all the time. We just had a heat wave and I could hardly function.

The dress in the first picture is so cute! I love it with the bag.

i love your color block dress!

Hi there-very stylish outfits-simple can certainly be chic!!

Loooove the turquoise dress! When it gets hot and sticky, I reach for nice cotton or linen pieces. And stay close to AC :D I'm thinking about working some strapless pieces into my wardrobe as well.

LF said...

dead on regarding the heat, it's been blistering! I have gotten then most random burns standing outside-the sun is that damn powerful!

about summer attire I think you are right again, it starts to get real 'simple' since there isn't that many options you have when its 100. less is more! and adding accessories to give an outfit life is def the right way to go, love your ethnic bag!!

the colour of the first dress is just FAB.

when im suffocating in confining clothes, i tend to wear floaty maxidresses that fall away from my body - almost as good as not wearing anything.
