Walk Like A Man*

New York Times

For Father's Day, Cath and I took our dad to see The Jersey Boys. I had no idea who they were. I assumed it was an old musical group from the days of yore that my dad had enjoyed. Turns out (pardon my ignorance on current popular musicals) The Jersey Boys is a musical based on the lives of a band from the days when my dad was a swinging bachelor.

Me (in a dress from Walmart- the devil, I know) and my very dapper dad.

The Four Seasons (Frankie Valli and his falsetto voice singing "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Walk like a Man," and "Oh What a Night" should ring a bell- for me it was a very distant, quiet bell- more of a tinkle), Jersey Boys was a full on biopic of all the music my mom avoided when she was a swinging bachelorette. Whilst my dad listened to Frankie Valli and Olivia Newton John, my mom dated jazz musicians and liked George Harrison.

I have to say, using my parents' musical inclinations as an indication, I'm much more my mother's daughter. That said, I would probably swoon just a little bit (okay, a lot bit) if a man sang "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You"- even in a falsetto. But then again, that would be easily trounced by "Lay Lady Lay" in any sort of voice- and neither of my parents liked Dylan. Yeah, I know.

George from Salon.com and Franki from Entertainment Weekly.

What song would make you weak-kneed if your significant other could croon?

LL

*Has there ever been a less masculine sounding song? Didn't help that the Jersey Boys did a feminine little hop while singing the song. According to my dad, the real Four Seasons would never have done that.

Virtually anything from Mr. Wonder!

-funny that you mention george harrison because he wrote "Something"...and THAT is another song that I would LOVE for any good sounding fella to sing to me!

Oh laydeee! You look so foxy in that ruffled polka dot number. This sounds like such a sweet thing to do with your dad.

My weak-kneed song? Hmmmm perhaps a tousle-haired French guy singing Carla Bruni's Quelqu m'a dit.

Unlike 99.9% of the female population, I really don't like it when men sing! Weird right? I love music, and I am a fan of many artists, but I'm just not attracted to musicians (or dancers).

Jersey Boys! My mom and sister saw it in NYC and loved it. And in a Broadway revue I did, we had a little excerpt from it too.

What a great pic of you and your dad! (love the dress by the way). I think anything Elvis would work for me, though there's a fine line between making it sound cheesy ;-) Even though I'm a rock girl, nothing compares to the music back then... it was just so much more charming and natural.

Eeek. Frankie Valli makes my skin crawl - you are truly good daughters to endure that show for your dad!

When the Stars Go Blue, I think I would just melt on the spot. My band and I sing it and even every time we sing it I swoon. Oh Ryan Adams, why did you have to go and get married, we could have been perfect! Also, I love your walmart dress.

p.s. Guess who headed over to Brooklyn to the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah studio on Monday, oh yeh that's right, this kid. *points at self with thumbs*

Oh my goodness, how cute are you two in that picture?! This sounds like a pretty interesting Father's Day activity.

Hmm I'd be more inclined to fall for a great dancer than a crooner, but that's just me. ;)

Oh it's your dad! Glad you had a great fathers day! I love the matching shades and shoes on you!

That's adorable! You and your dad look so cute together.

Also: Has there ever been a less masculine sounding song?

This had me laughing on the floor. I have to agree, the irony of singing anything about being "like a man" in a voice that sounds totally castrated is way too ironic.

I love Jersey Boys! I wish I could go see them perform! Your dad is very lucky to have you as a daughter. Hmm..it would be tough choice to say which song I want my bf to sing...it probably sounds corny but I like "Backstreet Boys" songs a lot...so maybe "I want it that way"...yeah, I know. xxoxoxo

:) I remember going to see the Four Seasons with my grandpa last summer. He really, really enjoyed it. It was so sweet to sit on the grass in Boston and watch him reminisce. I know it means a lot to the "old timers" (as they refer to themselves) in our family when we share their favorite past times with them.

It's pretty trippy going through his record collection. Hope you guys had a good time!

i love frankie valli! i'm a sucker for any old school italian crooner (sintra, dean martin). before i left boston, i saw frankie valli perform and he's still sounds the same. he can still hit those high notes!

Your dad is adorable! And I have to give you a little tsk tsk for not knowing who the Four Seasons are!! But nothing like a broadway musical to give someone an historically accurate representation, so you're caught up now. And I'm supremely jealous you got to see Jersey Boys because I MISSED it! Okay and this is going to sound cheesy, but I always get a little misty at the song "Oooh child, things are gonna get easier, ooh child things'll get brighter" by Five Stairsteps. And I might just faint if I entered another dimension where my boyfriend would croon that.

Aww, your dad is way cute.. and very dapper! That's a great picture of you both. I've always been partial to Jack Johnson's Flake.. that would make me swoon. :)

xo, Becs

When Bec and I were home in Jersey, my mom was saying she wanted to see the Jersey Boys :) Your dad is soo cute! One of my ex boyfriend's and my song was This I Promise You by 'NSYNC! I think I'd swoon if my boyfriend could sing it to me because the song is talking about life-long promises! xoxo

You and your dad are too cute!

Love your dress and shoes. The one song that would make me go weak-kneed would be the title song for The Beauty and the Beast. It was so romantic and touching

I love some outfits at Wal-Mart but I have eco and ethics guilt if I ever purchase anything from there! Lovely dress, though.

And your dad is so cute!

What part of either of you is Cajun? Or French?
