Brideshead Revisited. . . revisited

I know an Evelyn Waugh novel isn't exactly light, summer reading, but Brideshead Revisited is going on my July reading list.

The soon-to-be-released Brideshead Revisited film is the reason why I'm brushing up on my Waugh. Those of you who grew up like Lauren and me, with a healthy dose of Masterpiece Theater each month, have probably already seen at least part of the 1981 Brideshead mini-series. We've seen all 11 episodes (that's 659 minutes), so you can only imagine how excited (and relieved) I am that BBC has made it into a (100 minute-long) film. The fact that Emma Thompson is in it is just icing on the cake.

Below are a couple of comparison photos of the two versions (2008 images on the left, 1981 images on the right).

I can't wait to study all the costumes in the film. There are a few images on imdb.com that show some of the clothing, but not much. I couldn't find a website for the film, but hopefully more photos will pop up online closer to the release date.

Great post! I love the cover of the book and the costumes in the movie are so stunning and inspirational! I hadn't heard of this film before but I really want to watch it! Emma Thompson and Jeremy Irons are both fantastic actors!

Also, thanks for your wonderful comment on my post! :)

Danz, let me know if you go see the new film or if you rent the mini-series. Jeremy Irons plays a great Charles and I have no doubt that Emma Thompson will be fantastic - as always!

oh man. If men still went around dressed like that I don't think my loins could be held accountable for their actions.

Do you think you'll be reading anything that involves the Cookie Monster or LeVar Burton? Because that is the only PBS programming I watched as a kid. :)

Natasha, you are too funny! I can't stop laughing, but I'd be right there with you! If only guys would still dress like that *sigh*.

Stephanie, Lar and I loved Reading Rainbow! Kids these days don't know what they're missing.

Jesus what incredible costumes! It's so rich, I want to point out what's gorgeous but literally every single shot is full of incredible pieces.

You know what's strange is sometimes a film full of lush, beautiful period costumes will make me feel overwhelmed, like I can't take it all in and enjoy it in time, like I need to watch the movie at half speed or something. It also reminds me how important it is to enjoy clothes for their inherent beauty and not just for their potential to be worn by me, because there aren't enough days in a lifetime to wear all the beautiful clothes in the world.

Haha, it's almost zen!

It's hard to believe Jeremy Irons so young or Emma Thompson so...old...
