Indie Surf at Vacation*

Photobucket

Vacation* is a new thrift store that opened up right down the street from the new Urban Outfitters in Midtown/Highlands (Atlanta), and although this sounds slightly sacrilegious and hypocritical, I'd say skip UO and just stop by Vacation. It's cheaper and you won't see 50 other hipsters wearing the scarf you just bought.

Also it embodies this style that I'm gonna call Indie Surf. I'm not sure if others have called it that already and I'm just mooching (Google only produced some excellent music blogs, but nothing on fashion or style). I'll define it as a mix of indie, grunge, ethnic boho and beachy neon, embraced by bands like MGMT and embodied by indie kids who are tired of wearing just black and gray.

Even though I feel like I'm on the edge of too-old to be dressing like this daily, I'd like to attempt it on weekends. For those of you not in the Atlanta area or without a wallet full of cash (Vacation sadly does not yet have a credit card machine), I'm researching online indie surf attire options. Stay tuned...

* We had been mistakingly called this store 'Have Love Will Travel,' which I thought was a mouthful but very poetic and appropriate, but, you know, 'Vacation' hits the spot too. Thanks for the tip, anon.

I can NOT wait to go! I had no ideal, I've been out of town for sometime. It's exciting to come back to new shops like H & M!!!! I'm told there has been one at north point mall of a while now. I'm also told the lines for the dressing rooms are huge

Ohmy, it seems like a pretty awesome shop!!! Ohyes, I hate it when they are so many people having the same clothes I have! Like, when you're walking in town you'll bump into so many wearing the same :/

Thanks, anonymous vacation gallery person! Corrections are being made.

Heather, Cath and I are waiting until the crowds die down to hit up H&M, but we are glad to spread our shopping bug ;)

Yiqin, exactly! Can't stand it. Yea for thrift!

A nice, clean design for a thrift store. Great photos.

Yes, Inide Surf, that name is perfect! When Wayfarers started becoming so popular again, I kept calling them surfer glasses, because that's how I thought of that whole look. I feel totally validated. :)

That store looks great--I love the way the ground is painted!

You rarely see vintage shops with a clean, modern decor like this--so often they veer into kitsch with feather boas everywhere and battered mannequins wearing pink wigs. Maybe that's just Seattle but man, this place looks cool.

I pass by this place everyday and was wondering what it was. Glad you checked it out. :)

ambika you are so right on this one- I lived in Hermosa Beach CA and it was the same deal. Glad to see a shop of this style minus the tacky! well done.

Could Indie Surf be making a comeback? Aren't Rumer Willis, Pete Wentz, Wilmer Valderamma & Kristin Cavallari among young celebs doing ads for OP? I didn't even know OP was still around...

hey, i stopped by yesterday on the way to dad's garage and picked up a couple of things. i came online and found this site- i'd no clue u only opened recently! just wanted to say (if i didn't make it clear before) that your store's selection really really impressed me. this is coming from someone who has been to a TON of trendy (in good ways and bad) secondhand shops. u've got stellar taste! keep up the good work!

As a vacation shopper i can attest that it is the Hippest store in ATL since junkmans daughter first opened! I sure hope they stick around as long!
