Eye Candy: Old Hollywood Posters

Hiking in Stilettos' weekend post featuring Audrey Hepburn in A Roman Holiday reminded me of these great images of old movie posters I found at graphics.com. Even though these posters are 50-plus years old, their designs are surprisingly modern and fresh (keep in mind I'm not the AsianCajun that's a graphic designer, so my opinion is completely unfounded).

Below are a few non-Hepburn posters that I love.

I love these. I always favor the European designs over their American counterpoints. I have the Italian version of the "Breakfast at Tiffany's" poster.

Oh, Audrey Hepburn!She IS timeless.

I love old movies posters. When I was 16 I bought my mom a 1959 Imitation of Life poster that I found in an antique store.

This was a great blog entry. Those posters!

Czarna Carmen stopped me in my tracks. The image is never enough for me so I googled it. "Carmen Jones" is now at the top of my netflix queue. How could I not know this movie? Otto Preminger? Dorothy Dandridge? Harry Belafonte? Pearl Bailey? Plus Bizet?

Then, there's the poster for Sunset Boulevard, gorgeous, gorgeous. But what country would have given a higher billing to Erich von Stroheim than to William Holden? Hilarious.

I, too, love old movie posters. Thanks for sharing these.

Sally Jane, me too - the European posters always seem more creative.

Stephanie, next time I go antiquing I'm going to look for some cool movie posters.

Coco, what a great idea!

Jill, it's amazing how old printed items can be so inspiring for current designs.

Mary, the Czarna Carmen poster is my favorite of the bunch. Let me know what you think of the movie. Good question about the Sunset Boulevard billing - maybe the designers thought the names looked better in that order? Or maybe Europeans weren't big fans of William Holden - although Audrey Hepburn was quite taken with him...Maybe we'll never know why.
