Public Art in Decatur!

Last Saturday Catherine and I took a stroll around Decatur to visit some of our favorite spots (hello, Heliptrope, Eviva and neighbors!). We also made sure to stop by the mysterious bag art right next to Melrose on Ponce. After seeing it on Decatur Metro last week (great photos, Carl!), Cath and I decided we had to scurry over and see it for ourselves.

We have deduced that it is a baby elephant (though DM says "pup"). Our Decatur Dumbo is made of white plastic bags and gallops (do elephants gallop?) jauntily over a vent all day/night long. Recycled, public art! It doesn't get better!

* A note to readers not familiar with the AsianCajuns' "home"town, Decatur is located just 6 miles east of Atlanta. It's a small town that hugs a big city. We're very friendly.

Post Edit, 9:00pm Wednesday:
Meet the artist! Joel has done a bunch of other awesome public art installations- check them out on his blog here. He calls our elepup (good one Lady E!), Baby.

Also, for those of you who want to see Baby in action, check out Carl's video here.

Lastly, the outfit: hat, jacket and shoes by H&M, tee by alternative apparel, "wet" leggings are from Rockit.

Perhaps elephant pups are only native to Decatur ... OR maybe the trunk is a new addition!

Either way, that's a fantastically cool public art project.

I love finding little things like that around town.

'...a small town that hugs a big city...' what a nice way to put it! I'll admit all I know about Atlanta I learned from OutKast albums.

Hey that's my house!

I too like your outfit. The hat really brings it together.

Finally, we need more public art in Decatur! We should be a city of homes, schools, places of worship, and dope murals on previously blank walls.

Anytime I drove past the sign for 'Decatur' (I went to college in Greenville, SC, so trips to to the H Mart in Atlanta were often made), I always wondered if it is pronounced DECK-uh-ter, or De-KAY-ter.

I've heard both versions used in conversation. I've also witnessed a long, drawn-out argument about which pronunciation is correct.

Ah, random thoughts! Anyway, the elepup is very cute!

I don't know what's cuter, then artistically inspired elephant, or the adorable outfit with the ridiculously chic fedora! I guess now that I've typed that, it's clear that I do know what's cuter. But the elephant is still sweet! :D
